Reading Music

When we write music we can do it in lots of different ways.

Some people will use pictures, others use colours. Sometimes music can be written with shapes or different patterns and designs. Sometimes music can be written with photos or even actions, and of course music can be written with proper music notes too, or a mixture of everything!

Have a look at the different videos below and see if you can follow along and can 'read' the music. To show you can read the music you might like to make up some easy dance moves (like a hop, jump or twirl), you could try playing different parts of your body (like clapping your hands, clicking fingers, stamping feet, hitting your thighs), or see if you can find some items around your house that you could use to make different sounds with (like pots and pans, wooden/plastic/metal spoons and utensils, a cardboard box, a squeaky toy or anything you can find!).

If there are other people at home maybe see if they want to join you and create your own band! Maybe you could try and record yourself playing one of your favourite songs and could share it with your friends or teachers later on.

Have fun and challenge yourself to read the music and play along with it!

Waltz of the Flowers

In this video the music is written with Flowers!

There are 3 different flowers that you will need to read - Red, Blue and Yellow flowers. The bees will help you read the music - just follow them.

You could make 3 different dance moves or actions to play this song, or could find 3 different sounds with items from in your house to play. something in your house to make so
Play your instrument or do your dance move when the Bee jumps on the flower.

Watch out for the 'special' flowers at the end!

Deteggtive Anderson

For each of the videos below you can choose either a dance move, body percussion sound, an instrument or another sound for each coloured egg.

Each of the videos gets harder as you go along. Be sure to follow your conductor (the bunny rabbit) and practice your short and long rhythms/sounds, as well as your breaks and rests.

There are 4 different levels. Level 1 is the easiest and Level 4 is the hardest. Make sure you are reading the music correctly as it changes a little bit each level and can get quite tricky!

The Can-Can

Can you, can you do the Can-Can?

This song starts off slow and then gets faster and faster and faster!

Try and find different sounds you can play quickly and easily. Body percussion like claps, stomps, clicks and thigh slaps will work really well. Or find a few different sounds you can play easily and quickly at home.

DO NOT try to dance to this while reading! You'll get really dizzy.

You might also notice that this music has shapes/images, colours and also uses some proper music as well. Try reading the music in all the different ways.

And watch out for that turtle!

Ronda Alla Turka

This would be a good one to play with a few other people.

Ronda Alla Turka is a song that repeats itself over and over. That makes it easy to learn but can be tricky to remember where all the patterns go!

The music for this video has been written like a video game! Dots and lines will fall down the screen, and when they hit the bottom you need to play them!

You can play the music by making body percussion or finding by different things that make sounds around your house.
